Happy Birthday America!!!

Woke up early today to climb Mission Peak with friends.  We hit the trailhead at 5:10 AM and reached the top exactly two hours later.  We took it nice and slow, stopping a few times to enjoy the view, catch our breath and take pictures.  At the top, we had a ball taking our photos while holding the handy US flags we brought with us which we also shared with some of the hikers.  What a great way to start the 4th of July!

Happy Birthday America and thank you to the men and women of the military and their families for their service and sacrifice so the rest of us can be safe and enjoy freedom. Home of the Brave, land of the Free.

color me spring!

My friend Candy was back attending a conference on nanotechnology (nano what???) in San Francisco this week and we had exactly one full day together before she flew back to Washington State U.  She's been here many times before and been to all major go-to places so i decided to bring her to Filoli Gardens in Woodside, CA.  She's a sucker for photography and i knew she'd love it there.

Recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century, Filoli welcomes you to this remarkable 654–acre property including the 36,000 square foot Georgian country house and spectacular 16–acre English Renaissance garden.  Filoli was built for Mr. and Mrs. William Bowers Bourn, prominent San Franciscans whose chief source of wealth was the Empire Mine, a hard-rock gold mine in Grass Valley, California.  Mr. Bourn arrived at the unusual name Filoli by combining the first two letters from the key words of his credo: “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”

Luckily, we were blessed with a beautiful day and, together with my son and Lia, we had fun taking pictures of the colorful flower gardens...  a perfect way to officially welcome spring and celebrate its blossoms with two of my bestest friends.  Ang saya-saya! :)

renewed friendship

April 4-7, 2012.  My April started with a reunion of sorts with highschool classmates Anilee, Jane and Christy.  Anilee and Jane live a couple of hours away from each other and together with Jane's hubby Teph & son Basti they drove from Bakersfield, CA to spend a few days with us.  Jane's family recently moved from New York to California and it would be our first meeting since our Maryland trip in 2009.  Anilee, however, visited me 6 months ago to celebrate my birthday.  It would be fun seeing them again!

Golden Gate Bridge from different angles on a
beautiful spring day (no fog at all!) - April 5, 2012

A week before our reunion, Jane got sick and had a couple of visits to the ER but despite that was stubbornly determined to go on with the road trip.  The weather wasn't also cooperating -  the Bay area was soaked in heavy rain (with thunderstorm and hail in some areas) but miraculously the sun showed up on the day they arrived.

The next day we headed to San Francisco hoping for a fogless day so we can take great photos (importante ang pictorial!).  If you live in San Francisco or ever been there, you know that your worst enemy in enjoying the view and taking great pictures is the fog.  Fortunately for us, the majestic Golden Gate Bridge can be viewed from any angle in high definition ALL DAY.

We crossed the bridge and savored it from different viewpoints, had lunch at the iconic Mel's drive-in, drove down the crookedest street and ended our day at Pier 39 where we met up with another HS classmate Christy who resides in Hercules.  Christy and Jane haven't seen each other for 21 years (since highschool graduation) while the last time i saw Christy was in college (mid-90s)... it would be our first time to meet here in the US.  Very exciting! The moment we saw each other we exchanged warm embraces and stories as if not a day went by since the last time.

We had early dinner at Bubba Gump while reminiscing the good old days and excitedly babbling about the series of events that all brought us here.  Listening to everyone's stories made me realize that just like the famous line from the movie which is the theme of the restaurant, i have to agree that life is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get!

Thanks to facebook, we are pretty much updated with each other's  present lives so we had less "catching up" and more time to laugh, enjoy the sites and take pictures.  Still, a few hours with Christy wasn't enough... i hope to do it again soon!

For now we are truly happy and thankful for the time we had together.  Who would have thought that two decades after high school we would all find ourselves reunited here when back in the days we only read about San Francisco through pocketbooks/romance novels and imagined that we were here and knew it very well?  Ahhh... life is full of surprises!

____

Basti also celebrated his 9th birthday last Friday and Anilee and I managed to set-up a yellow-themed party for him while Jane dozed off hehe... Basti has grown so much since the last time I saw him and it's a joy seeing him get along well with my son.   Kudos to Jane and Teph for all the patience and hard work, you guys are blessed with a happy healthy smart kid the same way that Basti is blessed to have you in his life.

Happy Birthday Basti! soar high and dream big. anything is possible!

Happy 40th Shelle! Life begins...

what a fun weekend i had! a roller-coaster of events and emotions. First the ladies went out Saturday night to sort of start our year with laughs (a bit late but it's still January anyway) and to celebrate Shelle's 40th birthday. We carpooled to Edna's Ichiban Library in South San Francisco, a filipino entertainment business showcasing gay singer-comedians and other wannabee singers who dare go up the stage. it was my 3rd time going there, second time for the other of girls. But it's the birthday girls' first time so she was really in for a big surprise!

and like always, we had a blast! We occupied the front and center table and the entertainers that night - Poka, Rey Kilay, Poyay and Divo - interacted with us many times. Our favorite part is the dancing and we went home craving for more. And did i tell you the food was great too?!

Indeed, laughter is an instant vacation!

For her birthday party which we had the next day - or shall i say a few hours later - i made a 3-layer chocolate cake with mocha buttercream filling and frosting topped with dark chocolate-covered coffee beans and wrapped with bittersweet chocolate lattice. It's my first cake for the year and only the second birthday cake i've ever made in my entire life. ^_^

For the cake recipe, click here.

And the reason why i said "roller-coaster of emotions" is the disappointing loss of the San Francisco 49ers to the New York Giants for the NFL AFC Championship! One more win, just one more win, and we could have earned a trip to the Superbowl! :(((

trick or treat?!

we had a fun Halloween night at the Taladua family's new house in Milpitas, CA.  We had a great time carving pumpkins and going around the neighborhood to ask for treats. Racrac surprised us with his enthusiasm as he gamely walked the entire block in his Darth Vader garb without once asking us to carry him and unabashedly knocked on doors with the rest of the kids. That's my boy! And yeah, the whole gang voted for him to win Best Costume, his first award ever! hihihi...

Villa YOSEMITE Valley

Two venues for my 35th birthday: Villa Yosemite in Groveland, CA and Yosemite Valley. We didn't go there for the sole reason that it's my birthday, we were there on a trip with friends hoping to catch the last of the summer sun.

What a nice birthday surprise...

We stayed at Villa Yosemite in Groveland, CA which we rented for a little over one grand for 2 nights of "owning" the luxurious 7.5 acre lot and calling ourselves dons y doƱas. Really, really beautiful property and so sweet of our friends to let us sleep in the master's bedroom (it's my birthday eh!) We especially love the kitchen and the movie theatre... I wouldn't have complained if i had to sleep in its comfy seats.

Day of my birthday, October 3, we left after breakfast to drive to Yosemite National Park (about 40 minutes). Our first stop was the Tunnel View. Coming from the south gate to the valley, one has to go through Wawona tunnel and as you emerge from it, this is the scenery that will welcome you...that's why it's called you guessed it, tunnel view. Unfortunately for us, we came the other way (north gate, i supposed) and therefore we reached the viewpoint first. It was only later, on our way back to the parking lot, that i noticed the tunnel hahaha. Still, it was a breathtaking scenery...sort of a teaser, a prelude, a beautiful summation of the park's attractions: El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridalveil Falls. We lingered there for a while, took pictures, savored the view. I was so happy to be there with Fil, Racrac and our fun-loving friends.

Later we descended the valley to get a closer look. We stopped at El Capitan...it sure looks "commanding" up close. Sadly, there was no water coming over Bridalveil falls so we drove by and ended up at the village store for lunch and souvenir shopping. After lunch, everybody was too lazy to do more exploring, must be due to high altitude sickness or maybe because we have kids. Hmmm...not really. We were just too excited to go back to the villa (",)

We had a feast that night, they even made me a birthday cake. All it took was a box of cake mix, strawberries, a candle and some whipped cream and a scoop of ice cream to go with it. Love it, love these people. We spent the rest of the night just hanging out, eating (of course!), watching the kids play... I took a dip in the jacuzzi tub before going to bed. Life is oh-so-good!

Before leaving the next day, we managed to have another breakfast fit for kings and queens (courtesy of my husband who also prepared breakfast for everybody the day before) and settled in the theatre to catch the first few minutes of sunday football, yeah! We convoyed back to the bay area and were home around 2pm. The 3-hour drive was just perfect for an easy out-of-town trip...not too far, not too close...maybe we can go back next time to camp. It would be fun!

By the way, i have another reason to celebrate: October 4 is my 2nd year anniversary here in the US! Time really (really!) flies so fast!

Sundial Bridge, Burney Falls

Happy to be back from a weekend camping/hiking/fishing/partying with family and friends at the McArthur-Burney Falls State Park in Burney, CA last August 21-23. We left our house at 9:30 in the morning Friday and arrived 4 hours later in Redding and stopped by the Sundial Bridge. Built in 2004, it is a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Sacramento River and connects the northern and southern campuses of the Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Sadly, it was scorching hot (1oo+ deg) when we got there and despite my do-anything-for-a-picture travel attitude, we only made it halfway through the bridge. We could have walked to the other side of the 700-ft bridge and back on any given fair-weather day but not that day when the sun was burning our skin.

From there, we hooked up with friends along the way enroute to Burney which was about an hour of what felt like driving in the middle of nowhere until we reached town proper. As soon as we entered the park, we were welcomed by the thunderous yet soothing sound of the falls that it was hard for me to resist not seeing it right away. We spent the rest of the day setting up camp, preparing dinner and just hanging out with friends.

The Falls
After breakfast the next day, we headed off to Burney Falls which is a short walk from our campsite accessible from the parking lot. We first went to the falls overlook (just a few steps from the entrance) which was nice because we could see the water flowing from the upper stream to the lower stream. Then we proceeded to the base of the falls by walking along the .3 mile paved trail. At first we brought Racrac's radioflyer wagon which turned out to be a bad idea 'coz we had to deal with a couple flights of steps. Fil had to return the wagon to our campsite and i went on with the group with Racrac in tow. It was easy since he agreed to walk. If you have a baby or a child who doesn't walk yet, you can use a baby carrier (front carrier or backpack type) to secure your child. But even without it, the trail is so easy you'll survive.

Burney Falls is such a beauty no matter from which angle you view it. Gorgeous, indeed! Unfortunately, water is not swimmable since the average temperature is 40degF even during hot summer days.

Here's a video of me and Racrac getting closer to the falls.

We reunited with Fil at the base and took lots of pictures then we followed the trail that circles the falls and brought us to the upstream (top of the falls), the site for fishing. The hike wasn't easy this time. After we crossed the downstream bridge, the trail went up and rugged. Poor Fil had to carry Racrac all the way through the climb. We found a spot just under the upstream bridge for fishing and stayed there idly just watching our friends guiding their poles.

Lake Britton
While the falls is the centerpiece of the park, most of the fun really happens at nearby Lake Britton which is ideal for fishing, boat launching, swimming and water sports. After our friends returned from fishing without any single catch, we drove the short distance to Lake Britton where Racrac and the other kids had fun playing in the water and building sandcastles while our friends continued their search for the very elusive fish. It didn't take long and they luckily caught one! Congrats Jerry and Gladz! :)

Good food, great company
...are two things that make a happy camper. Our last night together was again a feast and we brought so much food that we were still not done grilling come 10pm curfew. The following morning we hosted ala-IHOP breakfast for everybody at our place. One thing i love about camping other than being outdoors is the sight of Fil cooking breakfast when i wake up.

By 12nn we have all packed our stuff and ready to leave but not without again seeing the falls. All of us descended to the base of the falls to once again admire its beauty and for a group picture. Like i would always do, i took a mental picture to remind me of a beautiful sight on a beautiful day in the company of beautiful people.

camping under the redwoods

July 3-5, 2009. Our summer kick-off activity with friends at the San Mateo County Memorial Park, Pescadero Creek Road in Loma Mar, CA. No cellphone signal, no internet (translation: no facebook!) and no microwave to heat our food but we sure had loads and loads of fun!

Everyone enjoyed setting up camp, partaking in the feast which every family contributed, sitting by the fire sharing stories, hiking to the creek and throwing pebbles (Racrac loved this!), kids riding the wagon and their bikes, searching for banana slugs and participating in the treasure hunt, adults exchanging gifts via white elephant (tinamad na mag-adult treasure hunt haha!), biking, running around, taking pictures and just hanging out with friends savoring the sunny but cool weather under the shade of centuries-old redwoods.

hi there, bye!

it's always nice to reconnect with friends, especially if you haven't seen each other for quite a while.

my BFF Candy spent a few days here in the Bay Area coming from her 3-week vacation in the Philippines to drive around and see some sights. Night before her flight back to Washington, she dropped by our house to personally see her inaanak. Surprisingly, Racrac wasn't cranky at all even if he was a bit tired from the party we went to that afternoon and sleepy 'coz it was already his bedtime. It's so great to see Candy again after 17 months!

then last Saturday, we covered 7o+ miles from Fremont to Modesto to see Fil's college friends. Hyacinth is on a California road trip from Texas with her family and we met them for brunch at Miller's house. Fil haven't seen both of them for 27 years and they communicated only recently, can you imagine that?! Of course you can. One word: Facebook.

It was amusing to see the three of them reminisce the good old days in Silliman University (Fil spent his freshman year there) and they were giggling and laughing and teasing each other as if they were only talking about what happened yesterday and not a quarter of a century gone by! Geez, for me that would be like having a second life and talking about your first life.

And speaking of being away from friends for a lonnngg time, did i tell you that i was reunited with my Grade I bestfriend through Friendster after 23 years of zero communication? We were only 7 when we unceremoniously said goodbye and met again when we were 30. Even though i have a couple of pictures of us together, for many years i thought she wasn't real, that she was just a product of my childhood imagination...but not until i got a Friendster message from her on the very day of my 30th birthday:

10/03/2004 11:14 am

hi I was looking for my grade school friend and her name is Carmel baylon. Did u by any chance went to Laguna Northwestern Institute in San Pedro Laguna? Grade 1 classmate ko sya eh. Ikaw ba yun? My name is Hazel Cruz-Rivera.

Isn't that miraculously awesomely amazing?! Long story short, we met for lunch, did some shopping and had our picture taken at a studio after getting free makeup from the beauty section of the department store LOL! We didn't see each other again after that 'coz life took her to Singapore and well...you know where i am right now.

Like all things, even good times with friends don't last. we said hello...then goodbye and promised to upload pictures and keep in touch. thank God for Facebook or Friendster...or whichever of these online social networks our generation is soooo lucky to have.

easter picnic in the park

Happy Easter everyone! what a fun-filled celebration we had with friends yesterday at Ed Levin Park in Milpitas! we failed to show up early to reserve the best spot but it didn't matter 'coz we brought our tents and set-up a campsite. we also prepared so much food (as usual...) that even after we're done with lunch, a stranger would think that the party hasn't started yet hahaha...the kids gamely participated in the easter tote bag decorating activity and the egg hunt. Racrac was no match to the bigger kids but with papa's help, he managed to fill his bag with a dozen eggs. the ladies got busy with the easter photo frame project, the boys gathered around the grill, the kids had fun running around and we all had a blast (literally!) playing the pass-the-water-bomb especially after mine exploded in the air before i could even catch it. yaiks!

This is the finished product of my magnetic photo frame project with racrac's photo taken during the hunt. what a cutie! :D

Hope you had a fun and meaningful celebration too!

home for the holidays

February is here and it's a shame that i still haven't blogged about our Christmas vacation. I'm just busy doing nothing? hehehe...or maybe daydreaming?...still in denial that i am actually back here in the US fighting the winter chill? I know, i know...vacation is longgg over and time for me to move on. But before i do, let me write about it. We had a wonderful time in the Philippines and here are some i'd forever keep in my memory:

1. Family bonding. Being the first apo, the goal is for Racrac to spend time with his lolos and lolas. We spent Christmas in Manila at my parents' house, attended the christening of my nephew AJ, took a short trip to Tagaytay with the whole family and checked out the new Manila Ocean Park with my brother's family for an underwater experience. Racrac also enjoyed playing with his one & only first cousin AJ who is 8 months younger than him.

In Davao, he bonded with his lolo Willie and lola Pacita for two full weeks. We ate out, drove around the city, quietly welcomed the new year (ssshhh, bawal ang paputok!), went swimming and beach resort hopping, malling and just walking and running around the house playing with whatever he could find while being watched by his lolo who had difficulty catching up with him hihihi.

My mom also flew from Manila to Davao after new year so she was able to meet Fil's parents and spend more time with her apo.

2. Beach resort hopping in Samal Island, Davao - The good thing about Samal Island is that you face the waters and you don't see endless open sea but you get a panoramic view of Davao City making you feel happy that you are in an island enjoying the wind and the wave and the sun and the sand. Paradise Island Resort is still the best in its league when it comes to accessibility, cleanliness, food and service. And their waters are always more fun, i wonder why?

Chemas-by-the-Sea Resort on the right side of Paradise (if you're facing the resorts) is a welcome change from the usual noisy, party-like resort atmosphere. We enjoyed the semi-privacy and we were lucky to get the best spot but the swimming pool is too cold, food is so-so and the service, very poor. We're also not happy with having to climb to the restaurant and the steps leading down to the beach have very wide gaps. Not senior-and-kid-friendly. But it's still a new resort so i forgive them. I hope that time will see them improve.

Blue Jaz Resort on the left side of Paradise, we learned, is owned by an American from Florida who married a Samal native. Lucky girl! It's a wholesome fun family place: nicely-decorated bar, airconditioned overnight accommodations, nipa huts and swimming pool. The kids will love the giant water slides, kiddie pool and trampoline. Manong our waiter said they opened to the public only summer of last year and the owners still have big plans for the resort. I suggest they improve on their boat transfer 'coz we waited for so long under the sun just to get to a boat which we thought would never come and when it did, it was pure chaos: paunahan and nobody there to assure me that the boat is not overloaded.

3. Food, family and friends. What's a vacation without food trips? And what's food without having family and friends to share it with? In Davao, we had our fill at Jack's Ridge (delicious, as always!), New Asia Restaurant (to satisfy Fil and his dad's craving for crabs), Probinsya (buffet lunch for P215, go go go!), Bigby's, Gardena Fresca (the best spareribs, we ate there twice!), Yellow Fin, Marco Polo lobby lounge (love the prime beef burger!), Cafe Josefina at Apo View hotel (buffet afternoon snacks for P125 each, why not?!!!), Taps and of course our everyday garlic fried rice-eggs-hotdogs breakfast combo. So yummy!

In Manila, Fil finally had the tapsilog breakfast he's been dreaming of at Max's and we had dinner at Kalye Juan and Mannang in Mall of Asia during the couple of times we went there to shop. Mannang is the filipino version of Mann Hann restaurant if you don't like chinese food.

In Tagaytay, we wanted to go back to Viewpoint Restaurant where we had dinner last year but it is located farther down the main highway and the weekend traffic wasn't encouraging so settled for Dencio's instead. Good decision 'coz later we found out that Gerry's Grill has occupied the original site of Viewpoint and we don't know where Viewpoint has relocated or if it still exists.

In Makati, we had a sumptuous classic Filipino dinner at Fely J's for two consecutive nights at the new Greenbelt 5. We went there at my insistence after reading it at a PAL mabuhay magazine. While waiting for our order, the couple next to our table heard us talking in "bisaya" which caught their attention and guess what, they were Fil's classmates in high school! Small world, huh! We joined our tables and Fil got too excited with the conversation that he suddenly lost interest in the food. When we met for dinner with my friends Gracie, Grace & Wilma the following night, we decided to eat there again! Highly recommended: lola ising's adobo, beef mechado, thai green curry.

We also stayed at Shangri-la Hotel Makati during the last two nights of our vacation and the overwhelming open-kitchen buffet breakfast at Circle's were just too tempting to resist.

4. Love being pampered! - After a long flight and a week of driving around the city and frolicking on the beach, there's nothing like surrendering your body and soul to a mind-relaxing stress-relieving massage. This we experienced at Lazuli Spa luxuriously located at The Deck of Marco Polo Davao where I had my 60-minute warm herbal oil massage twice. I also love my 2-hour "happy feet" treatment at Philosophy Salon which included foot spa, reflexology, pedicure and manicure (with free iced tea and cheese sandwich). I have to tell you my feet felt not only smoother and lighter but they were literally smiling as i step out of salon hehehe. Love it!

5. Coffee Experience. Coffee addicts? Guilty! In Davao, Fil and i spent some alone time "coffeenetting" (coffee+internet) at Blugre Coffee in MTS and had animated conversations over coffee with UP KBytes at Coffee Dream in SM Davao, Karlo's Coffee Station at Jack's Ridge and Bo's Coffee. We brought my mom who's also addicted to caffeine to Figaro hoping for lava cake but they don't have it anymore so we settled for coffee and ensaymada instead.

In Manila, we tried The Coffee Experience in SM Southmall to take a break from the crazy christmas holiday crowd, Starbucks Coffee in Mall of Asia (again to take a break from the crazy christmas holiday crowd), Figaro in Tagaytay (the only one that sells Barako blend, our favorite!), Figaro and UCC Park Cafe in Glorietta and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in Greenbelt 3 (my personal favorite...so many memories here!)

But of course, nothing beats drinking complimentary 3-in-1 coffee in our hotel room while enjoying the view from our window. With that much caffeine intake and jet lag, you could just imagine if i ever slept when we got back here in the US.

6. UP Kbytes reunite! Grasya, Allan, Dante and i saw each other last in May 2007 and this time, we had a bigger cast. Ivy was scheduled to do business in Davao City for a day (she's from Kidapawan City) and i only got the information early in the morning of that Saturday so i had to gather everybody for an impromptu lunch and coffee at SM. It was so nice to see all of them again especially Ivy whom i haven't seen since the christening of her first baby my inaanak 8 years ago. She is one of my very first friends in UP and we shared a room after college and enjoyed those early years of independence.

I met again with Grasya, Dante & Allan to pursue the dinner we originally planned for at Gardena Fresca but a couple of days later, i woke up to a text message from Joy who was already on her way to Davao from General Santos City hoping to still catch me. And so we all congregated again for dinner and coffee. Grabeng gastos! But it was all worth it 'coz we had fun reminiscing the good old crazy days and just happy to be together again.

It was one full month of nonstop action but still not enough to accomplish everything we planned to do. It's difficult vacationing with a baby, we always have to attend to his needs first and adjust to his schedule. And did i tell you about our flight experience? 14 hours on the plane from San Francisco to Manila and back? hindi pa kami nakakarating sa Manila pagod na kay Racrac hahaha... But it's ok...masaya pa rin! We were also thankful that Racrac didn't get sick and he was always charming and active, a show-off most of the time, when he was around people.

We got back here in the US happy but tired, exhausted, stressed. I think i need a vacation after this vacation. hehehe...

testimonials

when Friendster started plaguing the Philippines in 2003, i was one of those who got infected. i could still remember back then, my friend Dolly kept pestering me to accept her invitation and write her a testimonial. it took me a couple of months, i think, to give in to her pangungulit and that basically was how i got myself into this popular free social networking site.

anyway, if you're one of those who started Friendster 5 years ago, i'm sure you remember that the now comments section used to be the testimonials section. there, your friends can write what they think about you, your character, your hobbies, interests, antics, secrets...sort of a eulogy except that you are still alive to listen to it hihihi. as always, i took this task of writing testimonials for my friends seriously the same way that i expected them to be honest and witty and wacky when they write their "testi" for me.

too bad Friendster does not allow us to arrange these testimonials/comments according to our preferred hierarchy 'coz it automatically lists the most recent. right now, the comments in my main profile page are mostly birthday greetings and hi's/hello's from friends. the most interesting ones are buried down there...waiting to be unearthed and discovered by maybe somebody either doing a background check on me for lack of better things to do, an ex who wants to find out how my life went after i dumped him (nyahahaha! kapal ko talaga!) or most probably the current girlfriend/wife of an ex who wants to satisfy her curiosity about me LOLz

before these testimonials become totally forgotten and left to virtually disappear in the dust bins of cyber history, let me retrieve and immortalize them in this blog. let me remind you though that my friends wrote them voluntarily and willingly. They were not at all coerced, held at gunpoint, blackmailed or sedated and none of them owed me money or anything at the time of writing. Here goes...

Grace wrote on October 27, 2003: I've known Cay, (as we call her) since our highschool days. a funloving sweet girl who's a great guitar player. Small yet remarkable, she's sincere and true to the friendship we have. Though we have gone through life's up and downs, she was always there as a friend. She's a friend worth keeping for life. :)

To Khay, thank you for being the friend that you are to me. Our friendship has withstood time and distance and am very proud of what we have. Sana, one of these days makumpleto ulit tayo (GRAB'C). Omar wrote on February 1, 2004: How do you even begin to describe such a complex creature as Carms? We'll, I'll take off from whence it all started, that is, from the time I first saw her. It was sometime in the middle of 1998 when somebody from our office introduced Carms to me. Immediately, I was charmed. She was like a warm ray of light in a cold, dark place. The months that followed, thus, were as wacky as one could imagine. As I got to know her, I liked her even more even as she was as talkative as the worse mother-in-law in the world. Yes, we talked a lot and like me, she has plenty of things to say about any topic. Although she had one advantage: she was more up-to-date on the latest showbiz tsismis, local or foreign. Not only that, she was particularly abreast with the latest "in terms or gayspeak, like, as what are popular nowadays, "papa," "papable," "faffy," "charing," etc. We also talked about our favorite TV show then which was the X-Files. We were fascinated and intrigued with the show so much so that we called ourselves after its main characters, Agents Mulder and Scully. I took delight in referring to Carms as Scully --- played by actress Gillian Anderson --- because like Scully, Carms is petite, pretty and intelligent (Sobra na to Carms, you really owe me for this!). As for Mulder, who was played by David Duchovny, I'm not sure what similarities, if any, the character had with me. All I know is that Mulder and Scully are good partners, both sexy, and good-looking. They also cared for each other deeply and could have ended up in each other's arms. (Hmm..what am I saying here?)

I resigned from our office in December of 1998. But since then, Carms and I never lost touch. She was busy (allegedly) with her work and busier still with her boyfriend. I was happy for her, of course, but there was no denying that a part of Mulder was jealous. I guess that's normal when friends no longer spend time together as much as they should, when all your friend's attention is devoted to another person.

Time, of course, has its own way of testing friendships. I can say with certainty that my friendship with Carms has stood the test of time. After all, here we are, still texting, seeing one another on rare occasions, spending a few minutes on the phone every now and then to say hello and "kumusta ba tayo dyan." Carms is still being makulit to me. She even prevailed upon me, against my better judgment, to write this testimonial. I grudgingly agreed after she promised to treat me to a sumptuous meal at my favorite restaurant (he he).

A person is truly blessed to have Carms as a friend. She is who she says she is, plus more. She's "makulit" but knows when to leave you alone; she talks a lot but listens sincerely when it matters most, she can discuss a lot of nonsense but will not back down from a serious or intellectual discourse, she speaks her mind and makes known her dislikes yet never judges another person, she is free as a bird but guards fervently her values, she's funny, wacky and hilarious but "malalim" at the same time, and most of all, she's so lovable and loves deeply in return. That's Carms. And she'll always have a special place in my heart.

Gracie wrote on February 4, 2004: Passionate. This word best describes my friend Carmel. From her relationships with friends, families, significant other, to pursuing her interests and hobbies, dreams and in almost everything.... She would travel far and wide just to see her boyfriend who is based in Cebu. And once she started a project, say cross stitching or puzzle, she would spend hours just to finish it immediately. I also remember one time she told me about her experience with SMART Communications. She did not let it pass, she wrote a letter to smart expressing her disappointment and even forwarded the letter to her friends.

Loving. This is another word that best describe Carmel. When we are together she would tell me stories about her family and other friends. She makes it a point to be with her family even if she is living independently now. Also whenever she visits her relatives in La Union she makes it a point to bring gifts for everyone. She is also very concerned with her cousins, all she wants is the best for them.

Love for cats. One thing we have in common is our love for cats. Super love nya mga cats nya. She buys groceries just for them. I remember one time when she went to Bicol for a three day vacation, she asked me to sleep over her place so that Yna, her cat, won't starve. The funny thing is that I have not seen Yna, so I thought the first cat I saw in front of her house is Yna. Yun pala ay isang impostor. Its good that I have not given her food yet but in the end, I shared some of the food also. There are more to Carmel than what i related. You should meet her...my super friend!

She makes my life meaningful.. You know how? She is always there to preach me of what is good and what is bad. Wherever she is, she makes it a point that no one is worrying about her. She is very responsible and organized (ayaw nya ng masyadong makalat).. I remember the times I was in her house, ang linis ng bahay nya kahit na she's only home at night because she spends most of her time at work, although sometimes gumigimik. And I like her a lot because even if she has her own house, she makes sure that she visits her parents on weekends.

Pero di naman sa lahat ng oras eh mabait yan. Napupuno din yan, siyempre makulit din yan at masungit kung minsan, ika nga nila "Mabait na kaibigan, mapagmahal, pero pag nagalit..hmmm simulan mo ng magtago..Hehehe! one thing more as far as I know, pihikan yan pagdating sa boys, that's why I'm very happy for her now that she finally found the man who made her fall in love again..(I wonder what did her boyfriend do?) siguro talaga lang nainluv.. as of now i'm running out of words na, kasi naman she is everything na yata, ah basta no one would ever replace her in my heart as the best cousin in the world and I treasure every moment I had with her. ILOVEYOU COUZ!!!!!

Kahit lulubog-lilitaw basta you feel good knowing that they are there somewhere. For me, Carmel is one of those friends. We were roommates in College - very good times indeed! Feeling rockstars talaga kami. Ang galing ni Carmel mag-guitar and I was a very eager student. We played while others studied ;) hanggang may magpatahimik sa aming galing sa ibang kwarto. Siguro kung hindi political science si Carmel e shrink ang galing kasi rin nyang mag-advice. I text mo lang sya, kausapin o tawagan may maipapayo yan - wala pang hourly fee. I trust Carmel a lot kasi she can really keep a secret - o ayan wag mong ipagsasabi yung mga sinabi ko sa yo ha. Carmel is fun to be with and always stimulating ang conversation pag nandyan sya. I'm very lucky to be her friend at sa mga iba pang kaibigan nya - agree kayo di ba?'

I love my Yaya, otherwise, no amount of pleading/persuasion/threats will induce me to write this. I met Maricar when we were both freshmen at UP. She was different then.Simple & natural (in short, fresh from the boondocks). As early as then, she can't be parted from her face powder.

Carmel is a real trooper. She never ceases to astound me with the extent of her craziness & wacky ideas.During a vacation out of town, she managed to make me follow her around like a nanny & photographer rolled in one.It amuses me how devoted she can be to her loved ones (2's; 3's and 4's).Blessed with a big heart (small boobs however), her capacity to care is boundless.

A friend you can depend on (lagi siyang may pagkain sa bag),Maricar is a great fellow to be with & a nice person to call friend. Did I say that she is a great yet tiresome model? With her scintillating presence (bola na to!) she can make a plain scenery radiate with great
effervescence.

How she found the discipline to resist high-in-carbohydrates food or the lure of Coke is beyond me. All I know is that she's good in persuading other people to join her in fun activities like traveling, badminton, videoke and swimming. She endures my company in games of SCRABBLE and patiently jots down our scores. Even in games, she's highly organized, systematic and disciplined. In other words, she's so OC-OC like Kristine Hermosa in her latest movie with Aga Muhlach. And when you think you've known her well enough, she'll surprise you by doing the unexpected such as designing shirts, taking care of our house cat (and her kittens), bead crafts, or even assembling jigsaw puzzles.

Lia wrote on January 8, 2005: it was 1993 when i first met this girl who had an unwavering sunny disposition and a shrill voice. for the entire SY 1993-1994 she was a fixture in room 111 in kamia because her friend happened to be my roommate. i was certainly amused by her ability to talk relentlessly about anything under the sun. there was never a dull moment with her back then, one day she'd be playing the guitar the next she'd be dancing the lambada. other days she'd rant about school and teachers and the next she'd bet her friend that she could kiss longer than her.she'd sleep with a big mirror beside her.she talked me into getting a short haircut, to tack my shirt in and to learn to play the guitar. it has been almost twelve years since that fateful school year and we still are very good friends. i say we had grown so much from the time i got free lumpias from her and noel. i have seen her through her roller coaster rides (or relationships). i have seen how well she handled everything with so much poise...

You can't help but be affected by her charm and love for life when you're with her, even the National Artist for Sculpture was enamored with her!!!! But what I cannot forget about Carmel is our trip to the Rice Terraces. I was tired, grumpy and dying of thirst during our 3 hour hike along the cliffs from Batad to Bangaan. I ran out of drinking water, but the wonderful friend that she is, she offered me her last drop (I didn't take it of course, but the thought counts).
Happy Birthday Girl! I wish you all the happiness in the world and most of all, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you find the perfectly crazy loving delectable guy you've always dreamed of, and hopefully you don't get bored with him in a snap ;)

Angie wrote on February 4, 2007: Carmel is always a revelation! There's always something new about her, never a dull moment when you are with her. We both worked at the Commission on Appointments for sometime, and now, looking back, I must say we indeed have shared a lot of good life experiences. She was the one who baptized my email monicker angelwolf54. You see I am already in my 50s, Carmel is only a couple of years older than my eldest daughter. Now even if we are distant in miles, she still manages to surprise me with her talent and intelligence. I love reading her blog and looking at her pictures! Galeeeeng Carmel! Hopes to be near you again soon!!!

Carmel Figueroa, how about dat?!

carmel is adventurous, forever reinventing herself, sneaky, deceptive, won't stop 'til u are trapped! but she gets bored easily so after she has demystified u, make sure u have other talents (e.g. bumuga ng apoy, kumain ng buhay na manok) to keep her awake...'coz when she says "ho-humm," it's time to pack ur things. kaloka...! but that's not all she is. in her normal sedated state, carmel is sweet, generous, defenseless, go-with-the-flow, down-to-earth, walang arte, willing to be tamed.

she can be as meek as a lamb or as fierce as a tiger, depends on her mood. when she flashes that enigmatic smile, u will be left guessing what she's up to. go figure!

Amy wrote on May 9, 2007: NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC: Don't ever permit the "happy-go-lucky image of Carmel fool you. Believe me, she is the detail-oriented, organized, strong-willed and thoughtful one among the members of our short-lived post-college sleepover gang (Remember Ivy, Allan, Reypots & Dante? hehehe). As a strong advocate for women's rights, she shows this through her independent lifestyle, education, work experiences and even in her literary outputs.

As a friend though, I can't help but be amazed by Carmel's vibrant character. Her positive and spirited nature is contagious! There's no dull moment if you're with her. Plus, her standard greeting ("Hoy, Oclarit!) just never ceases to make me chuckle this be thru SMS, email, etc.!!! When I saw her again last December 2006, I was completely delighted that she never changed a bit. She's still the typical Libran I know: CREATIVE as a writer, PASSIONATE in her relationships, SMART as me (hehehe) and of course, BEAUTIFUL inside/out!

The privilege of becoming Carmel's friend entitles you to the following: a free paperback copy of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets; supplies of Bears and Hugs cologne; meeting her anti-virus (hehehe); and glimpses of Asia through her travelogues.
Lastly, here's what an 'ex' wrote in March 2004: She came into my life like a sweet surprise. Even until now, during quiet moments at my desk, I can't help but wonder and smile when I think about how lucky I am to have found her. In the year that has passed since we met, I have come to know Carmel very well. Her personality compliments mine perfectly. I am somewhat introverted and shy, she is friendly and easy to talk to. She makes friends easily. She can go hours and hours talking while I can go hours and hours listening. My opinion about a topic can be very objective while hers would be highly emotional. She loves to read while I settle for the movie version. She is more generous than I am. She is thoughtful, caring and very affectionate. Not to say that I am not but she is better than me in many ways. I am amazed by how much her friends love her...I too love her. I love the way she laughs. I don't know anyone who has a laugh like hers. I love the way her hands fit in mine...the way it feels when she cuddles up to me. I love the way she tells me she loves me out of the blue. I love the way she makes faces at me when we look at each other sometimes. There is so much more but most of all, I just love the way she loves me. It's a feeling like nothing else when you realize you've received the greatest gift of all. So honey, this is my tribute to you. I hope that with this, the world can get to know you for the wonderful person that you are.
hmmm...interesting, poignant, enlightening, heartwarming testimonials. FACT or FICTION? well, you heard them from my friends not from me so i guess that would be enough premise to consider the high probability that they're true. hahaha.

christmas & baby shower party

We had another super fun christmas party last night. It was the most organized yet chaotic christmas party i've ever been to, with 8 families in attendance!

And the surprise baby shower was a real shock to me and Fil. Thanks to all of you guys for organizing it and participating in the baby games. We appreciate the gifts...now we're even more excited to have the baby!

Merry, Merry Christmas!

party peeps!

Still fresh from our fun thanksgiving party, our group had another party last Friday. I refer to them as our "bisaya" friends because yes, we are all proudly bisaya! I am one of the newest additions to this growing group, the latest is Sarah Jane's one week old baby. From the little history i've gathered so far, this group started as a barkada of engineers in Cebu and later grew into an extended family that now includes their respective spouses and kids + their friends and co-workers (and their spouses & kids, too!) here in the US. They met Fil here years ago and adopted him so I earned my automatic membership when I married Fil last October. Ang saya-saya! hehehe

Our excuse for the party? Andrew's birthday! We didn't have lechon this time but still had lots of food and twice the noise and fun. Of course, dili mawala ang mahjong, guitar hero and wii!

Check these out...(thanks to Juan & Shelle for the photos)

perfect timing

It's as if the universe conspired for us to be in the same place at the right time. Last May 29, Tuesday, i found myself having dinner with college friends Alan, Dante & Grasya at Yahong restaurant in Davao City. They were my orgmates in UP Kutang Bato, an organization of UP Diliman students from the Cotabato Province (north & south) possessing extraordinary intelligence, talent and beauty (hehe walang kokontra!). Fil was there too and he amused himself with the sight of the four of us talking non-stop reminiscing the good old days and at the same time stuffing ourselves with crispy pata, kare-kare, sinuglaw, crispy buntot ng tuna and sinigang na hipon. Sabi ko nga extraordinary talent di ba? kasama na diyan ang talent sa pagkain :-)

Allan was my college bestfriend and remained so a few years after college. My time then was divided between him and my boyfriend. We had so many fun moments together until he decided to leave Manila to work somewhere else. Now he lives in General Santos City but ever the restless soul that he is can sometimes be sighted in Davao, Sarangani, Glan and nearby provinces working to make the world a better place and at the same time hunting for the very elusive "ideal man" hahaha!

Dante is part of our group, laging ka-join sa mga gimik! i don't remember spending time with him alone, we were always together in a group: KB outings, room warming, christening of ivy's baby. When i was taking my Master's in UP, i'd always bump into him: library, canteen, jeepney. He was everywhere, pakalat-kalat, and very popular! He now lives in his beloved Kidapawan City but visits Davao regularly for his hospital duties as aspiring nurse. Goodluck!

Grasya
, a native of Davao, chose to join Kutang Bato instead of Iso-Dabaw, another organization in UP exclusively for students from Davao. I think she is closest to Evelyn because they had time to hang-out even after college and to Ivy because they now both work for PhilHealth. I haven't seen her since 1995, maybe? After she got married, she went back to her hometown which made it even more impossible for us to meet.

But that day, we were all in Davao City. Who would have thought? It was a surprise dinner, literally!

We missed Amy (i saw her last December in GenSan), Evelyn (my current housemate so hindi ko ito nami-miss), Ivy, Cheryl B., Joydads & Reypots. It's ok, we had a grand time gossiping about them. Ang mga wala, ginalibak! LOL
