beach girls

Since I'm spending my summer layoff on the beach, I bought this book early this month to set the mood. Here, Luanne Rice introduced me to Emma, Maddie and Stevie who grew from girls to women on the sandy shores of Hubbard's Point, Connecticut and vowed to be friends forever.

But after spending a few summers together, their lives somehow took different directions and made things more complicated. While Emma and Maddie later became sisters-in-law (Emma married Maddie's brother Jack), Stevie has withdrawn into a self-imposed exile. Her isolation, however, was shattered when Emma died in a car crash (Maddie was with her that night and was blamed by Jack for it) and Emma's 9-year old daughter Nell returned to the Point with her widowed father and comes to Stevie in search of lost female influences.

beach girls now, beach girls tomorrow, beach girls till the end of time...

The beautiful beach and memories of friendship, blue skies and laughter brought them all together again as Rice gracefully breathed life into this tale of love and forgiveness.

Rice's writing style reminds me of Maeve Binchy. Reading it was a breeze, very highschoolish. Perfect for lazy summer days when all i care about is how to make the most of my time doing nothing.

world light expo 2007

I went to see the World Light Expo last Saturday, April 21, with Gracie and Candy at the junction of Roxas Boulevard and Coastal Road in Paranaque City.

For P200 each, we entered a bright wonderland of lighted gates and arches, pagodas, a miniature of the Eiffel Tower and Tian'an Men Square, dolls and animals made from hundred thousand lights and materials such as compact discs, glass medicine bottles and ceramics. Most impressive is a 100-meter dragon made from 100,000 pieces of ceramic plates, cups and saucers. WOW!

Armed with digital cameras and camera phones, we had a grand time prancing around the expansive area and taking photos left and right. Candy even brought a tripod (talagang kina-career ang photography, grabe!) so we were able to take pictures of all three of us together. Ang hirap magmodel, promise!

Throughout the evening, performers from different countries showcased their talents onstage. At 9pm we witnessed a water screen laser show and fireworks display, so close they appeared like colorful comets falling down on us. We also checked out the replica of the 1st Qin Emperor’s Terracotta Army and the Korean Folk Paper made (Hanji) Doll Exhibition.

The Expo boasts of a production cost of US$ 6M, employing not less than 10,000 persons over a production period of 2 years with designers from Philippines, Korea, China, and Italy using around 2 million bulbs in it. The event is for the benefit of Pangarap na Lupa Foundation and children with sight impairments.

I'm so happy to have seen it. Definitely a welcome breather from the usual bar-hopping and malling and a refreshing way to spend dark starless summer nights. You missed it? I heard it's moving to Singapore. Catch it if you can!

family beach, La Union

Every summer since 2001, my mom and i travel to Bauang, La Union to be with our relatives. An easy 5-hour drive from Manila, Bauang is a first class municipality bordered by San Fernando City (the provincial capital) to the north, Caba to the south, Naguilian to the east and the South China Sea to the west.

My mom's eldest sister, Auntie Aning, lives there together with the families of her four daughters. I have 9 nephews/nieces by my cousins and eventhough i'm not their first-degree aunt, i was able to bribe them enough with my yearly gifts to win their loyalty. hahaha.

We went there again last april 8-15. My pamangkins immediately quizzed me on my dialect, trying to see if i can still remember the few Ilocano phrases they taught me last year. Hmmm, let me try: apan ko diyay baybay tono-bigat, umay ka?, awan ti danum, nagbayag... napudot... madamdama...aguray ka...ay naku, ang hirap! bisaya na lang pls...hehehe

My oldest 3 nephews - Sam, Totoy & Pedro - are all grown-ups now and they blush whenever i
remind them of their exploits when they were little boys. At 14, Vincent still shares the bed with me and hugs and kisses me unabashedly in public. The two girls, Lourdes (12) and Maimai (8) can't stand each other but they unite whenever i'm around. The youngest kids are Angelo (3), Irene (1 yr. 6mos.) and Rosalinda (5 months). They're a joy to watch and play with.

The good thing about going here is you take a bus and jump off right at the gate of the
many beachfront resorts that line the highway as soon as you go past the town plaza. Here, one can enjoy a long stretch of beach paradise peppered with relatively cheap resorts, witness a spectacular sunset, ride the fun waves and treat yourself to a body scrub with its chocolate-colored sand. We are lucky 'coz my relatives live along the national highway so we have easy access to the beach. Most of the time we just put our towels and slippers on the sand or hide them inside a parked banca but during major picnic days, we rent a hut and bring food, bike and a guitar to complete the fun.

Part of our itinerary is to climb the
200+ steps leading to the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary grotto in a private property just beside my aunt's house. A visit here is never complete without seeing Mama Mary. If you are driving along the national highway from Bauang to San Fernando, you will see her nestled on top of a hill on the right side of the road.

We also went to San Fernando City to watch the movie
Ang Cute ng Ina Mo at the CSI mall. I saw it twice: first with the kids and second time with the 'oldies'. really, really funny movie! :-)

One time when we were at the beach, i found the chance to be by myself on the sand down by the water's edge under an azure sky (naks!). The sand was hot beneath my back but the fresh breeze kept me cool whil
e the tide slowly flooded in tickling my skin. I closed my eyes. I couldn't remember what my thoughts were that very moment. Maybe nothing. I was just enjoying the feeling.

Then i heard Maimai call me so i joined them. We played with the crashing waves...ang saya-saya! I snapped photos of everyone - the kids in their salbabidas, my mom & cousins playing cards, my aunts, the big boys, and also of Rosalinda riding a floating duck as souvenir of her first beach experience. We all had lunch and snacks together that day, all 19 of us, then waited for sunset before leaving. Lahat ay umuwing nakangiti...

Once again, the sea had done its magical work to our family. It washed away all negative thoughts, unwanted feelings, misunderstandings. It renewed the ties that bind, so to speak, and made everything right again.

sunset viewing

Here are some sunset photos i took during my vacation in Bauang, La Union last april 8-15.

April 9, 2007 - we hit the beach around 3pm and left just before sunset. my cousin-in-law who drives a tricycle forgot to go back for us but since my aunt's house is only a short 10-minute walk, we decided to go on foot. so all of us paraded with our wet clothes along a cemented 2-lane road in between vast agricultural lands. i took this photo just after we crossed the national highway.

April 12, 2007 - our major FUN day! we had a beach picnic starting at 10am. we brought food, play cards, guitar, bike and rented a cottage a few steps away from the water's edge. we basked in the sun and played with the waves and the chocolate- colored sand the whole day, kain lang ang pahinga. this time, we waited for the sun to go down and disappear beneath the endless sea. it was perfect: cool breeze, soothing sound of the waves, happy family, painted sky, glorious sunset. wish i could freeze the moment...

April 13, 2007 - Friday the 13th, yeah, but i'm sure even Jason Voorhees and Freddie Krueger and their minions would have stopped to witness the breathtaking sunset before searching for their preys. Beside my aunt's house is a vast private property open to those who wish to climb the 200+ steps leading to the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary grotto. Not only can one pray for Mama Mary's guidance here but also feast on the view of the quiet town and the sea as the day slowly comes to a close.

April 14, 2007 - this was again taken from the grotto as we visited Mama Mary for the last time before leaving for Manila the next day. not as spectacular as the sunset the previous day but nevertheless beautiful as it painted the sky with rich yellow, orange and red hues and covered the whole town with the warm glow of the last of the light.

songs i'm singing

today is Good Friday and am just home listening to music from my iPod. i would have wanted to do some stereo-blasting but settled for the earphones instead. bawal mag-ingay eh!... let me sing to you some of my favorite modern love songs...

marriage proposal song...

all i want is for you to be happy and

take this woman and make you my family and
finally you have found someone perfect and
finally you have found...yourself...with me
will you agree to take this man into your world?
and now...we are as one
- Hard to Concentrate, Red Hot Chili Peppers

celebrating the feeling of being in love...
I want to turn the whole thing upside down
I'll find the things they say just can't be found
I'll share this love I find with everyone
We'll sing and dance to Mother Nature's songs
I don't want this feeling to go away
- Upside Down, Jack Johnson

about finding love after many failed attempts...
It's so unbelievable,
And I don't want to let it go,
Something so beautiful,
Flowing down like a waterfall.
I feel like you've always been,
Forever a part of me.
And it's so unbelievable to finally be in love,
Somewhere I'd never thought I'd be.
- Unbelievable, Craig David

about trying to reach someone you love who's already too far away but knowing you can't...
Let me in to see you in the morning light
to get me on and all along the tears they come
see all come, I want you to believe in life
but I get the strangest feeling that you've gone away
will you find out who you are too late to change?
I wish I could be
every little thing you wanted
all the time
some times
- Every Little Thing, Dishwalla

a lovesong titled Yellow? why not?!
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
D'you know you know I love you so
You know I love you so ...
- Yellow, Coldplay

probably the only Metallica love song; loved it since its release in 1991...

So close no matter how far
couldn't be much more from the heart
forever trusting who we are
and nothing else matters

never opened myself this way
life is ours, we live it our way
all these words I don't just say
and nothing else matters

trust I seek and I find in you
every day for us something new
open mind for a different view
and nothing else matters
- Nothing Else Matters, Metallica
