beach girls

Since I'm spending my summer layoff on the beach, I bought this book early this month to set the mood. Here, Luanne Rice introduced me to Emma, Maddie and Stevie who grew from girls to women on the sandy shores of Hubbard's Point, Connecticut and vowed to be friends forever.

But after spending a few summers together, their lives somehow took different directions and made things more complicated. While Emma and Maddie later became sisters-in-law (Emma married Maddie's brother Jack), Stevie has withdrawn into a self-imposed exile. Her isolation, however, was shattered when Emma died in a car crash (Maddie was with her that night and was blamed by Jack for it) and Emma's 9-year old daughter Nell returned to the Point with her widowed father and comes to Stevie in search of lost female influences.

beach girls now, beach girls tomorrow, beach girls till the end of time...

The beautiful beach and memories of friendship, blue skies and laughter brought them all together again as Rice gracefully breathed life into this tale of love and forgiveness.

Rice's writing style reminds me of Maeve Binchy. Reading it was a breeze, very highschoolish. Perfect for lazy summer days when all i care about is how to make the most of my time doing nothing.
